Merle came to Goodwill in July 2013. He was unemployed but had a strong work history and wanted to get back to work.
Goodwill helped Merle build a strong résumé, practice interviewing, and search for jobs. After working a concession stand for Spokane County pools for a summer, Merle found work at Papa Murphy’s.
At first, Merle worked just a few days a week at Papa Murphy’s, preparing mini pizzas, salads, desserts pizzas, and the like. His Goodwill Job Coach helped Merle adjust to his new job, and helped his new manager and coworkers as well.
Merle has worked at Papa Murphy’s for more than three years. He often works six days a week. Patrick McCabe, owner of the Papa Murphy’s franchise where Merle works, says that Merle is one of his longest-term employees. “He is an important part of our team.” McCabe says Merle helps business efficiency, and he now helps train new employees. Merle’s co-workers love having him on the team.
On a personal note, Merle has learned how to advocate for himself. Papa Murphy’s has fulfilled his request for additional hours. He has purchased a car, applied for a learner’s permit, and has passed the written portion of his driving test.
Merle is gaining independence. He has set good goals and reached them with the help of Goodwill.
