Life before Goodwill was tough for McGavin. He struggled to find housing stability. He was in transitional housing, which means he had a place to stay temporarily. But things weren’t looking well for him. He couldn’t pay his rent, and he was on the edge of becoming homeless again. It felt like he was stuck in a tough spot. And he couldn’t see a way to move forward.
A Hand Up
That’s when Goodwill stepped in to give him a hand up. McGavin was referred to the Housing and Essential Needs (HEN) program at Goodwill by the Department of Social and Health Services. A HEN housing specialist helped McGavin find an apartment. They helped him with essential items like kitchen supplies, basic furniture, and toiletries. And they helped him get clothes to wear so he could feel comfortable and confident.
Bumps in the Road
McGavin’s stability journey hit a bump when his first apartment closed. So, he had to stay in a shelter for a while. It was a setback, but he didn’t give up.
Finding a Way Forward
Because of his rocky past, finding another place to live was tough for McGavin. But McGavin and his housing specialist kept searching. The HEN housing specialist connected McGavin with a private property manager who was willing to give him a chance. Finally, McGavin found a stable place to call home.
A Brighter Future Ahead
Now that McGavin has stable housing thanks to Goodwill, he can put his focus on becoming financially independent. He’s grateful for all the help he’s received. He says, “Without Goodwill, my life would be spent on the street or couch surfing from place to place. I am happy, healthy, and safe. I am overwhelmed by the abundance of assistance that was provided to me by my case manager. I have never experienced this [much help] before.”
Moving Forward with Gratitude
McGavin’s story shows us that with a little help and support, even some of the toughest situations can improve. Goodwill not only helped him with a roof over his head but also with hope for a brighter future. Now, McGavin is ready to take on whatever comes his way with gratitude and determination.
