Say goodbye to generic gifts and hello to sustainable surprises that spark joy and curiosity! Join us as we explore this delightful twist on gifting that’s kind to both the planet and your loved ones. Ready to matchmake with some literary or cinematic charm? Let’s get started!
Step 1: Choose your thrifted treasures
Head to your favorite Goodwill location! All of our locations have a book, movie, cd, and record collection! Look for hidden gems.

What to look for: Pick titles that have intriguing covers, cookbooks, interesting blurbs, romantic or rom com themes. Consider the recipient’s preferences when choosing titles. For a more personal touch your favorite movies or books that you think they should watch or would love to read.
This is also a fun idea for board games, cd’s, or even records. Just make sure you’re recipient has a record player!
Don’t forget your wrapping, boxes, bags, or accessories: Before you leave, don’t forget to check out the craft section for eco-friendly, reusable fabrics, materials, ribbon, flowers, old maps, and even scarves! These items not only make great gift wrapping but also can be reused. Two gifts in one for craft fans or keep them warm with a beautiful scarf that matches their personality or the book/movie theme.
We found fabric that matched the theme of the books. Who could resist getting “werewolf” fur to cover Twilight? A neat hint for the theme of the book.
Step 2: Craft a Fun Description
There are three fun options for you to surprise your loved one. Keep it mysterious! It is a blind date. Avoid revealing the title, let the recipient discover it on their own!
- Using a bookmark with a hook. Write a short, enticing description for each item. For example, highlight the genre, a captivating quote, or what makes it special (e.g., “A heartwarming tale of friendship and adventure!”). This method is great for when you’ve used scarves, fabric, or in our case fake fur to cover your item.
- Write on the book. The same as above but this is great if you’ve used paper to cover your item. Use colorful markers or pens to write the hook on the book or even using artwork to tease the book theme or title to them.
- A true blind date. This is where you don’t have a description at all on the book or movie! This option is fun for added mystery or only giving a hint based upon what you use to wrap the book or movie.
Step 3: Include a Personal Note
Not giving your gift in person or want to added another personal touch? Don’t forget to add a personal note or a card explaining the concept of the “blind date” gift and encouraging them to unwrap and enjoy the surprise. Invite them to share their thoughts once they’ve “dated” the book or movie!
Step 4: Curate a Themed Gift

Why stop at one item when you can create multiple blind dates! We had fun selecting different genres of books and movies and found the perfect gift box and card from the craft and holiday aisle to create a “Date Box.”
Not only is this gift sustainable and personalized, but it also supports the community. By shopping at Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest, you’re helping fund vital programs that provide employment, housing, and financial support for individuals in eastern Washington and north Idaho.
As you delight your loved ones with unique treasures, you’re also making a positive impact in your community. Happy gifting!
