At the beginning of the year, Timothy had to leave his home with his three-year-old daughter after his significant other became violent. He left in that person’s car but because that car was not his, he had to return it. That left him without any transportation. So, he went to a local organization with a shelter to find help.
Searching for Shelter
He was told that he had to stay there to qualify for services, but he didn’t want to do that with his young daughter. He went to two other organizations for help and to find shelter, but Timothy didn’t feel safe staying at any of those places either. They offered shelter, but because they didn’t have private sleeping spaces, it wasn’t a safe long-term solution for his three-year-old daughter.
It was all very difficult for Timothy because he also had a full-time job to go to, but no car. So, he spent what money he had to buy a used car. But he was also trying to keep his daughter safe and get to work every day, which was not easy. Finally, he decided to go to Goodwill and ask for help.
Finding Hope at Goodwill
Goodwill staff were able to help Timothy with legal resources so he could create a plan to keep his daughter with him. Then, Timothy found an apartment. But because he had spent all of his money on a car, he didn’t have any money for the move-in costs. Goodwill provided Timothy with money from Round-Up funds to help him pay for the move-in costs for the apartment.
A New Beginning
“Without Goodwill, I would have been homeless with my daughter,” Timothy said. He got the keys to his apartment in February and was able to move in right away with his daughter. Thanks to Goodwill’s help, Timothy was able to keep going to work, buy a car, get free legal assistance, and move into his own apartment.
Timothy’s story is one of bravery and strength. He was able to do what he had to do for his daughter and himself, so they could be safe. Goodwill is proud to be a part of their story.
