When Mark first came to Goodwill, life was really tough. He had just had back surgery but did not have a home, so he was discharged to the streets. Before that, he had a small place, but it wasn’t big enough for him, his wheelchair, and his partner. Because of the situation, he didn’t qualify for the housing help he needed.
That’s when Goodwill’s SSVF (Supportive Services for Veteran Families) program stepped in. Over the next four years, Mark received rental assistance, help with bus passes, a state ID, groceries, move-in essentials, and more. Goodwill was there for him every step of the way.
Most recently, the SSVF team helped Mark find a large, comfortable two-bedroom apartment. He loves his new place and says it’s the kind of home he wants to stay in for the rest of his life.
“They’re good about doing everything or anything I need or ask for—they accommodate,” Mark shared.
Without Goodwill, Mark says life would be “difficult, to say the least. I’d have a huge financial burden. I couldn’t have done housing on my own.”
Now, Mark is safe, comfortable, and finally feels at home.
