Before working with Goodwill, Gary was without a job and felt lost. Each day felt the same, and he began to feel like he was not making a difference. Gary also faced health challenges that made it hard to stay motivated.
When Gary started working with Goodwill’s employment services, he chose to give himself another chance.
For almost three years, he worked with one of Goodwill’s Employment Specialists. Together, they built his job and communication skills. Gary showed patience and dedication while participating in several programs. Even when progress was slow or challenges came up, he stayed focused and kept moving forward.
With help, Gary learned how to prepare for interviews, speak with employers, and find work that matched his skills and health needs. Over time, he began to see his strengths and believe in himself again.
Today, Gary works for Premier Manufacturing. This job gives him the chance to continue learning and growing in the manufacturing field. He is building skills that will support a career and feels proud to be contributing through his work.
Gary is a great example of hard work and independence. He faced barriers and setbacks but never gave up hope. Gary shared with his Employment Specialist that his life is no longer “meaningless or hopeless.” That change shows how far he has come and how much confidence he has gained.
Because of his hard work, growth, and commitment to building an independent life, Gary is being honored as one of this year’s 2025 Goodwill Independence Award winners. Gary’s journey shows that with determination and the right opportunities, anyone can become more independent.
