Erik suffered serious health issues that caused him to spend a lot of time in the hospital. These issues changed his life in ways he didn’t expect. When he came out, things were not the same. He had lost much of his physical abilities and could no longer work. Tasks that once felt normal were now difficult or out of reach.
But the hardest part was losing connection with his daughter. At one point, he was only talking to her on the phone occasionally. Erik knew he wanted to be a bigger part of her life again, but the path forward was not clear.
He connected with Goodwill’s Foundational Community Supports program and began receiving support and encouragement during this difficult time. While he faced new physical limits and could not yet return to work, he focused on what he could control.
The journey was not easy, but Erik stayed focused, even when progress felt slow. He committed to an intensive outpatient treatment program which he was able to graduate from. It gave him the chance to begin seeing his daughter in person again for regular visits.
He is now working on a parenting plan that will give him a steady schedule to spend time with her. At the same time, he has continued to work on his physical health.
He pushed himself to get stronger while waiting to be medically cleared to return to work. He had always been independent, and learning to rely on support while he healed was not easy. Still, he stayed patient until he got medically cleared and approved for social security benefits.
That gave him the stability he needed until he could work. Now, he works one day a week and still earns enough to cover his bills. The life he is building today looks very different from where he started. “I am thankful and appreciate Goodwill because they offered me support and encouragement when I was struggling,” Erik shared. “They made the impossible seem possible, which encouraged me to continue working towards my goals.”
Through determination and steady effort, Erik has rebuilt important parts of his life. He is regaining his independence, reconnecting with his daughter, and moving forward with purpose.
