For a long time, Jennifer struggled with homelessness, drug use, and crime. She had been in and out of jail. Each time she tried to move forward, something pulled her back. Life felt unstable and uncertain.
At one point, she was living in a place she called “the island.”
It was a small piece of land near the highway. To get there, she had to walk through water. It was not safe, and it was not easy. But it was where she survived.
Jennifer knew she could not keep living that way. She wanted something better. After completing treatment, she made a choice. Instead of going back to her old life, she reached out for help. That decision became a turning point.
Jennifer connected with Goodwill’s Foundational Community Supports program and began taking steps to rebuild her life. She didn’t do it all at once. She showed up, stayed committed, and kept pushing forward.
Through a scholarship program, she was able to move into an Oxford House. For the first time in a long time, she had a stable and supportive place to live. It gave her a foundation to start fresh. From there she worked on getting her driver’s license, something she had never had before. She stayed focused and followed through on her goals. Soon, she not only had a license, but also a job.
Today, thanks to funding from the Transition Assistance Program (TAP), Jennifer is housed in her own apartment. She also has a job, a car, and insurance — things she once thought were out of reach. For the first time, she feels steady and in control of her future. She has come so far.
“I am forever grateful to Goodwill for all the help, support, and encouragement,” Jennifer shared. “Even for pushing me a little when I wanted to give up. I would not have the life I have today if it weren’t for Goodwill.”
But Jennifer knows it also took her own effort to get here. She made the choice to change. She kept going when things were hard. She stayed committed to building a better life. Now, she is not just surviving. She is moving forward with purpose and building a future she once wasn’t sure was possible.
