For many years, Lucy did not have a place to call home. She lived without a home for almost ten years and faced many challenges along the way. One of the hardest moments came after a camping accident caused serious burns. Lucy was taken to Seattle, where she spent time in intensive care. During this time, she was fighting to heal while still facing the fear of not having a safe place to live.
After years of instability, Lucy came to Goodwill looking for help.
Through Goodwill’s Foundational Community Supports (FCS) program at Goodwill, Lucy received support she needed to move into a home of her own. Goodwill helped cover move-in costs so she could secure housing. Her pantry was also filled with food and household items, making it easier for her to settle in. Goodwill staff worked closely with her landlord to help make the move smooth and less stressful.
Once Lucy had a safe place to live, her life began to change. Having a home allowed her to focus on her health. She was able to get the surgeries she needed and no longer had to worry about infections or unsafe living conditions. Lucy can now receive support from her family and get help when she needs to travel to appointments.
Lucy shared how thankful she is to Goodwill for helping her get housed and for stocking her pantry. This support allows her to save food benefits for the future and focus on healing instead of surviving.
Today, Lucy has stability, safety, and hope. With her basic needs met, she finally has the chance to care for her health and look forward to the future—things that were not possible before she had a home.
