Before finding support, Marion spent most of her days helping her mother. She stayed by her mother’s side each day, going along to medical appointments and helping with errands. Because of this, Marion did not have many chances to meet new people or try new things.
Marion also used a wheelchair and depended on her parents for rides. Getting to places on her own was not easy. Over time, her world became smaller, and she had very few social connections. But Marion wanted more for her life. She wanted to work, build skills, and find a sense of purpose.
She connected with Goodwill’s Foundational Community Supports program for employment help. She began working with staff to explore her options. Marion stayed open to new ideas and played an active role in her progress. She was referred to resources like the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. She also began exploring online training in cybersecurity and worked on building job skills she could use in different roles. Step by step, Marion kept going.
Goodwill supported her along the way with job referrals, communication with employers, and regular check-ins to make sure things were going well. Soon, Marion began volunteering at a new work site. This was a big change for her. She started to learn spreadsheets with Excell and how to run a front desk. She also helps gather items for people.
Marion started meeting new people and becoming part of a team. She built friendships with coworkers and felt more included. Each day, she grew more comfortable and more confident in what she could do. And she developed a strong sense of purpose.
She began to feel proud of her efforts and her progress. She was learning new skills and showing others what she was capable of. Her employer noticed her willingness to learn and her positive attitude.
The changes were clear at home, too. Her family saw her become more motivated and engaged. She had a brighter spirit and a stronger drive to keep working toward her goals.
Today, Marion continues to move forward, taking each step with determination. She is building a life that includes connection, growth, and new opportunities. She shared, “I am thankful to Goodwill because of the continuing support and advocacy I receive.”
